NASA’s Earth Observatory has been running for over ten years and uses images and data collected from NASA satellites to learn more about the planet. The images are both stunning and startling, especially when compared to images from ten years before. Amazing images include Earth from Saturn, worldwide agricultural patternssnow and ice coverage and human presence. Some of the most alarming images are featured in the World of Change section, featuring Amazon deforestation, solar activity and the evaporation of the Aral Sea.

Skin deep

May 26, 2009

According to a new survey, ‘binge tanning’ is responsible for an increase in skin cancer diagnoses – over 10,000 Britons are diagnosed every year. This is predicted to rise to over 15,000 people by 2024, making malignant melanoma the fourth most common cancer in the UK. One of the main causes of skin cancer in women is overusing sunbeds before holidays (binge tanning) and is particularly prevalent in younger women. A survey of 4000 people found 1 in 3 women used a sunbed with 80% first using one when they were under 35. Data shows that women under 35 who use sunbeds increase their risk of developing melanoma by 75%.

Heart in your mouth

May 26, 2009

German researchers have found a genetic link between heart & gum disease. Gum disease (periodontitis) is already associated with heart problems although the reason for the link was not clear. Now the University of Kiel has found a common gene mutation in people with periodontitis and heart attack patients. Both heart disease and gum disease have the same risk factors – smoking, diabetes and obesity. People with gum disease should try to reduce their risk factors as early as possible, to combat both the spread of their gum disease and reduce the risk of heart problems.

National Breastfeeding Awareness Week

May 12, 2009

This week is National Breastfeeding Awareness week (10-16 May). New growth charts for children aged 0-4 yrs will be introduced this week by the World Health Organisation and the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health are developing materials to assist healthcare professionals in using the new charts. The charts are based on measurements of approximately 8,500 breastfed children worldwide. The theme of this year’s awareness week is that every day makes a difference to your baby and that with help and support from healthcare professionals, friends and family, mums are likely to breastfeed for longer, giving their child vital health benefits.
