Where do your shoes come from?

Where do your shoes come from?Greenpeace have released a film, Slaughtering the Amazon, highlighting the impact of beef and leather products on the Amazon rainforest. Many global footwear brands such as Adidas, Reebok, Nike, Timberland and Clarks source much of their leather from Amazonian farms. Many of these farms are involved in illegal deforestation and sometimes slavery.

Leather handbags, beef ready-meals and other products from big brands such as Tesco, IKEA, Kraft and BMW rely on Amazon beef and leather. The cattle industry is the single biggest cause of deforestation in the world and the Brazilian government has offered billions of dollars to expand the beef industry.  Greenpeace is asking Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula de Silva to commit to zero deforestation by 2015.
