The Vaccination Decision

March 1, 2010

Dawn Waterhouse will once again be running her vaccination workshop ‘The Vaccination Decision – it is not easy is it!’ taking place in April.

The Vaccination Decision – it is not easy is it
2010 will bring this workshop to it’s third year!  The 2009 workshop brought parents and parents to be from all over the country together to open mindedly explore vaccination and the options available.  The session ended with us gathering at our local public house for liquid refreshment and a meal.*  The feedback has been fantastic and there are still more requests for this workshop to be run again.

The workshop will run on Sunday 18th April 2010 from 10am to 12.30am.  The venue is Abberton and Langenhoe Village Hall, Edward Marke Drive, Abberton, CO5 7LP.  To book or find out further details please register your interest with Dawn, either by email or telephone 01206 735 780.

Your investment in this workshop is £35 per couple, which includes light refreshments and notes to take home with you. Well worth it if you are anxious about what other people will say! This workshop will help you appreciate other angles of the decision-making process.

A new report by Which? has warned that so-called healthy snacks designed for children’s lunchboxes are laden with hidden salt and sugar. After analysing the nutritional content of a range of snacks, Which? found that the products promoted as being free from additives are actually packed with sugar. Robinson’s Fruit Shoot orange drink contains 23g of sugar per 200ml bottle, almost five teaspoonfuls. Kellogg’s Frosties Cereal and Milk bars contain seven different sugars, making a 25g bar almost a third sugar. Dairylea Lunchables Ham ‘n’ Cheese crackers contain 1.8g of salt, more than half of the recommended daily allowance for a four to six year old child. Which? is calling for tighter rules on when manufacturers can make health claims – this would prevent sugary, salty foods being promoted as being healthy options due to high fibre or calcium.

Martyn Hocking, editor of Which? magazine, said: “Parents should be able to pick out healthy products for their kids’ lunchboxes, but what you see isn’t always what you get. Some products give the impression of being healthy, but are full of salt and sugar. The best way to beat the lunchbox baddies is by checking the nutrition and ingredient information. We’d also like to see the rules on health and nutrition claims made tougher, so there’s less confusion on the supermarket shelves.”

National Breastfeeding Awareness Week

May 12, 2009

This week is National Breastfeeding Awareness week (10-16 May). New growth charts for children aged 0-4 yrs will be introduced this week by the World Health Organisation and the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health are developing materials to assist healthcare professionals in using the new charts. The charts are based on measurements of approximately 8,500 breastfed children worldwide. The theme of this year’s awareness week is that every day makes a difference to your baby and that with help and support from healthcare professionals, friends and family, mums are likely to breastfeed for longer, giving their child vital health benefits. Spring issue of Juno

Natural parenting magazine Juno has reviewed Evie’s Kitchen in its latest issue.

“Not on a single page does the food look anything less than delicious, alive and vibrant. With enough ideas to keep a whole family satisfied, Shazzie’s book is a must for those just wanting imaginative ways to get their children’s five-a-day into them, or those looking to follow the raw path.” – Juno.
